Microsoft Is Renaming “Office Online” Simply as “Office”

Microsoft announced today that it is renaming “Office Online” simply as “Office”. Along with Office Online, other apps like Word Online, Excel Online, PowerPoint Online and OneNote online will also lose the “Online” brand. When Microsoft wants to refer to the Web version of Office, it will do something like “Office for the Web“, just like “Office for Windows“, “Office for Mac“, “Office for iOS” and “Office for Android“. Microsoft may also use terminology such as “… on the Web”, “… on Office.com” and “… in a browser” to refer to the Web version of Office.

Microsoft further stated that no change was made to the brand of its “Online” server products, including Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Project Online and Office Online Server.

This is why Microsoft is making this change:

Office uses secondary brands to indicate our offers such as Office 365 and Office 2019. As our offers have evolved to provide access to apps on more than one platform, it no longer makes sense to use any specific secondary brand of the platform.

Microsoft will withdraw Skype for Business online in 2021

Microsoft recently announced the withdrawal of Skype for Business Online on July 31, 2021, and also disclosed the retirement plan around it. Microsoft is literally going to withdraw Skype for Business. There will continue to be Skype for consumers and Skype for Business Server after this date. Furthermore, existing users of Skype for Business Online can continue to use the service until the retirement date. Microsoft will be boarding all-new Office 365 customers directly in teams from 1 September 2019. Microsoft is confident that even the most demanding corporate customers can completely replace Skype for Business Online.

Microsoft Teams does not yet have some features supported by Skype for Business Online. Microsoft is aware of this situation and is working to resolve it. Read below the missing features.

  • Dynamic 911. A feature of the Microsoft Teams telephone system, Dynamic E911 automatically uses the current position of the caller to route to a PSAP (Public Safety Answering Point) call center managed by the local government.   • Shorter storage periods. Shorter storage periods will be available in Teams by the end of this calendar year.
  • Team and Skype Consumer Interop. The interoperability between Team and Skype Consumer will allow users of the two services to communicate using both chat and call. Team and Skype Consumer Interop will be available in Team in the first quarter of the solar year 2020.
  • Contact Center integration and compliance registration. At the beginning of this month at Inspire, we announced Teams’ partnerships with Five9, Genesys and NICE to enable Contact Center solutions and with ASC, NICE and Verint to provide compliance registration. We are also collaborating with other Skype for Business online certified partners to bring other Contact Center and compliance registration solutions to the market.
